Up until my husband and I recently decided to take our friends RV and drive around the country for six months, we had absolutely no idea what exactly 3G mobile internet was, despite both being reasonably tech savvy – we had heard of it, of course, but just never really bothered learning any more about it.
A search online taught me that it was pretty much just portable internet that you could use from your mobile phone or your laptop computer, so long as they were 3G mobile internet compatible.
After buying a new laptop for our trip that was 3G mobile internet capable, we were able to take our vacation and stay connected at the same time. We found that most areas we visited were covered by the 3G network, and those that weren’t still let us connect, it was just quite expensive – so we only used it once in a while to send emails we had already written to friends and relatives back home.
That is some of the best advice I can give people who will be using 3G mobile internet while away from home – write your emails in a text document, then only connect to the internet when you are ready to send them. That way you can save money.
If you do a search online you will easily be able to find a list of 3G capable mobile phones and laptops, as well as finding the best service provider for you – just don’t settle on the first one; take your time to do some research, because it will be well worth it in the end.
